Idempotent homomorphisms of von Neumann algebras

Is there any description of unital idempotent ($F^2(x)=F(x)$) morphisms of a von Neumann algebra into itself? Or, equivalently, of weakly closed subalgebras which are retracts as von Neumann algebras?
