Thank you, that's a nice (counter)example. I'm wondering what happens if one restricts to finitely generated groups. Is it to be expected that the assertion holds in that case?

Two isomorphic reduced group $C^*$-algebras
In general the conclusion does not hold, as pointed out by JCA. But some classes of groups have the property you are asking for. Such groups are usually called C*-superrigid.
