Visiting this question years after it was posted and answered, I hope I can still contribute somewhat to the discussion: After much searching online, I discovered there is a set of articles on the subject by Carl-Brans available on the arXiv site. Also, he published a book on the topic named "exotic smoothness and physics differential topology and spacetime models". Cheers!
