The used symbols for equality and equivalence
Depends who you are I guess, $=$ is usually equals to. For identity/definition I have seen $\equiv$, $\stackrel{!}{=}$, $\stackrel{\bigtriangleup}{=}$ or if dealing with a specific equivalence relation $\sim$.
