Mathematical research interrupted by a war
You beat me to Schwartzschild. He both produced the solution, and died, in the trenches (or at least within sound of gunfire, after criss-crossing Germany during the course of the war). Remarkably, the solution was only a month after Einstein published the equations in his 1915 paper, in Berlin; and his death was possibly the result of accidental exposure to his own side's experimental chemical weapons.
