While this is most certainly a math site, since you mentioned fluid dynamics, it's worth considering that when dealing with physics, experimental results trump mathematical purity to a degree. If the dispute you mention is ever settled, it will probably be settled by whether the theories that arise from it make accurate predictions about our world. If they do, then I expect someone will eventually resolve the mathematical issues.
