Why is the deprecated function notation taught at high school?

This is somewhat of a cloned topic from another question I posted at Stackoverflow, but Wolfram claims that the function notation f(x) is deprecated in favor of f:x->f(x): http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Function.html

I understand that f(x) isn't at tedious as the other notation, but what are the differences in the notation? I've shown this to my Calc AB teacher but he's never seen it before.

What are the pros/cons of either?
