I thought that at least two of these did have initial objects and so said so. It appears that the original comment has been deleted. To avoid further confusion, I have now deleted my comment! Once you've read this, I recommend that we delete these two comments to remove all sources of confusion!

Aug 27, 2010 at 9:50 comment added Kevin Ventullo I am also curious. If a category has no initial object, you can always just formally adjoin an initial object such that nothing maps into it (except itself). This is basically the role the empty set plays in the concrete categories listed.
