Number fields and quaternion algebras arise naturally as invariants of commensurability classes of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. In this theory the number theory is informing the topology. I think that usually people are looking for things to go in the other direction (use anything and everything you can to answer number theory problems), but the process of taking a purely arithmetic fact and using it to distinguish topological structures is really beautifully done in this book, and you can find many other articles on the topic too. | |
