How Can You Get A Wisdom Tooth Infection?
Wisdom teeth erupt mostly between the ages of seventeen and twenty-one. While some people rarely notice its growth, others have to deal with a lot of pain.
According to the National Institutes of Health, oral cavities harbor over 700 different types of bacteria. Wisdom teeth are exposed to those bacteria immediately after they erupt. This is due to their positioning in the mouth. Since they grow at the back of the mouth, it is harder to clean them, especially for partially erupting wisdom teeth.
As wisdom teeth grow, they tend to require additional space, which the mouth cannot provide. They, therefore, end up pushing other teeth. Food particles can easily get stuck between crowded teeth. When food is stuck between wisdom teeth, it gets trapped in pseudo pockets (the small spaces between the teeth and gums). The bacteria present in the food particles can cause cavities or infection.
Once your wisdom tooth gets infected, it has a ripple effect on nearby teeth. The infection can spread to other teeth too. If not detected early, an infected wisdom tooth may lead to other dental issues at later stages. The infection may even spread outside the mouth if left untreated.
Therefore, it is important to consult a dentist if you may have an infected wisdom tooth as you may need wisdom teeth removal. Facial & Oral Surgery Institute will help remove the infected tooth.
