Stack Exchange network consists of 183 Q&A communities including Stack Overflow, the largest, most trusted online community for developers to learn, share their knowledge, and build their careers.
I thought this was answering the question because it "Demonstrat[es] that rigour is important". It also points out cases where having a (correct!) proof for something turned out to be very important for salvaging some results, which lost credibility and also the interest of the mathematical community, when their fundamentals turned out to be wrong. If more people think my impression was wrong, I strongly encourage someone to delete the answer.
