One generalization is the coloring of higher dimensional ball packings.  It generalizes the planar coloring in the sense of circle packing theorem.  

Asymptotically, the current lower bound is linear, and the upper bound is exponential. 

It has been asked on MO, and a FALSE quadratic lower bound was given. (I'll add references later on a computer.)
