Today the set-theoretic operations of intersection $\cap$ [German: _Durchschnitt_] and union $\cup$ [German: _Vereinigung_] are standard.

The modern notations are present in the first edition of van der Waerden's _Moderne Algebra_ (1930). However, the notation is mostly missing from Steinitz' _Algebraische Theorie der Körper_ (1910), which was a precursor of van der Waerden. Instead of _Menge_ (for set), Steinitz uses _System_. The term _Durchschnitt_ is present in Steinitz, but the word _Vereinigung_ and the symbols $\cap,\cup$ are missing.

Has anything been written on the history of set-theoretic language in algebra?
