Jordan algebras were introduced first by P. Jordan and J. von Neumann in order to give a mathematical context for observables in quantum mechanics (say, a structure that generalizes the space of Hermitian matrices). At the end, the classification was disappointing, and Jordan algebras do not play a role any more in QM, but the topic survived in Mathematics until now.
