The OP's question seems to be equivalent to "what are some of the influential dichotomies in mathematics?" If that's the question, I would cite a result that has attracted a lot of attention over the past few decades, such as Gromov's theorem that groups of polynomial growth are (nearly) nilpotent. This one has the advantage of sharing the word "polynomial" with the OP's question.
