Free abelian subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$
Does anybody know what is the biggest $r$ such that $\mathbb{Z}^r$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$?
