Construction 3) above goes from $ssSet$ to $sSet$ (and then to $Top$ via realization). Constructions 1) and 2) go from $ssSet$ to $sTop$ (and then to $Top$ via the second realization). I think the $|X|_k$ being sought in the original question is the $|X|_k$ from construction 2), which is not just a set but a space. The realization procedure gives an explicit construction of this space. Am I missing something?
