May 8, 2012 at 14:05 comment added B R In the opposite direction, attaching an elliptic curve to a Hilbert modular form (working over totally real fields) is complete modulo the Absolute Hodge Conjecture (so, not very complete!) and is known unconditionally under some assumptions.
