The author says "Several authors (Blumenthal, Hecke, Kloosterman) dealt with this subject, but none of them made it flourish. Contrary to Hilbert's expectation, progress on Hilbert modular varieties required a mature theory of analytic functions of several complex variables and of algebraic geometry." | |
