Dec 21, 2009 at 6:55 comment added Jonah Sinick Concerning (4), the book by Van Der Geer on Hilbert modular forms has an some interesting historical remarks. The author says "Several authors (Blumenthal, Hecke, Kloosterman) dealt with this subject, but none of them made it flourish. Contrary to Hilbert's expectation, progress on Hilbert modular varieties required a mature theory of analytic functions of several complex variables and of algebraic geometry."
