Mar 28, 2012 at 2:07 comment added David Jordan I'd note, in addition to the descriptions below of how to land at those precise relations, that E and F in U_q(sl_2) are skew-primitive elements, relative to the group like elements K and 1. See www-math.mit.edu/~etingof/tenscat1.pdf, section 1.27, for an explanation of the deeper meaning of skew primitive elements.
