I don't care if I persuade anyone to do anything in particular so long as I persuade them to think about what they do. Just like with the slides, you can't copy anyone else's style exactly, but you can borrow ideas and techniques and build your own style. Having lots of different ideas can help you ensure that you aren't artificially limited in what choices you make.

Part of my intransigence is the fact that I always feel in these discussions that there is a strong "Don't use slides" answer (even though the questioner asked directly for experiences of using slides) so I was partly trying to counter it. I wish I had seen every single approach to lectures done brilliantly (and poorly). I'm afraid that my experience has been very limited so I find myself having to invent my own techniques, and when I do I like to share what I've learnt.
Nov 7, 2011 at 16:30 comment added Thierry Zell @Andrew: I am very amused by your intransigence. I can understand drawing personal battle lines and saying: "I won't do x", but your answer here sounds a lot more like: "no-one should do x". All rules have their exceptions, and I'm quite willing to let lecturers operate on their own terms. I must have seen every single approach to lectures done brilliantly, and every one of them done poorly, depending on who was giving the talk...
