I don't know for certain that it works the same way elsewhere in Australia. I'd say there is no need for direct personal contact. It's just that any application gets passed around to the academic(s) most likely to be interested, and the applicant only gets accepted if one (or more) of those academics indicates a willingness to be the supervisor. So what's important is that someone on the faculty see a fit between his/her interests and those of the applicant. | |
