I understood how to get equation 7, and I understand that in order to reduce it, we solve for alpha to make the coefficient for y equal to 0. My issue is the unnumbered equation that results, solved for y<sup>3</sup>. If anything, I would assume that we'd be setting the resultant to 0, but that would produce a different equation, with an alpha cubed term in it, which the unnumbered equation is missing. I usually use Wikipedia for terminology and functions with which I am unfamiliar. Also, for 13 and 14, I don't understand how exactly they were derived.
