Aug 5, 2011 at 22:29 comment added JSE My comment is that I forgot to think about the decomposable locus, so thanks for working this out! Re the qualms with Ben's argument, surely it can't be fully right because both Ben and Jason gave examples of compact families of 4-branched covers.
