I apologize since this is not a research level math question. But I believe it is still relevant, and it is a question I feel is best answered by mathematicians.

What general resources exist for students in highschool who are very interested in Mathematics? What advice would you give to a young student to encourage them, and nurture their interest in mathematics? If a young high school student came to you and said they were very interested in math, and wanted to know what to do to keep learning, what would you tell them?

Suggesting a good book seems reasonable for older students, but most young students do not have the patience to sit down and read through things are their own. They are usually much less independent, and need direct guidance and help. (Of course there are exceptions)

In some cases, taking courses at a university early is an option, but it is not always possible.

Competition preparation and math circles naturally come to mind, and are among my top recommendations since I am involved in organizing one. However, I am really wondering about what other programs exist, and what type of general advice should be given to young students regarding how to excel in and enjoy mathematics.

Why this question: I am asked for this advice on occasion. However, I did only the basic mathematics in my high school, and only became very interested in the subject when I came to university. Consequently, I am not aware of how high school students develop their interests and begin to excel other than by doing contests and attending Math Circles.

Edit: Assumptions: Assume for the sake of this question that the hypothetical student is strong enough in contests to place in the top 100 for their countries Olympiad, is taking the usual high school mathematics courses and is very interested in learning more. Since they are at an early stage they are not even sure what areas they would find the most interesting, but they want to know how to proceed. What advice would you give. (Since this is country dependent, assume that the country in question is your own.)
