Jul 22, 2011 at 15:29 comment added Konrad Waldorf The thing with the loop is simply that you realize $w_1$ as a "principal $\mathbb{Z}_2$-bundle with connection over $M$". The homomorphism is its holonomy, which is trivial if and only if the bundle is trivial.
