I think part of the confusion I have with it, is that by using the term there is the direct implication that all other branches of mathematics are non-applied, non-relevant. And that's certainly not the case -- a lot of non-"Applied Mathematics" has quite a few real-world applications. So I much prefer to just call people simply mathematicians and describe precisely what they do, rather than support the pure/applied division.
