My main question based on the comments made here is whether there is a good unified method applicable to the entire family of rank 1 groups. That seems to me the most natural approach to such a question concerning a Lie family.

I'm not sure if I'm bypassing the underlying ideas; if you'd like to see it I'll put a copy in the mail to you.
