But nevertheless, a well-written letter by a recognized TCS expert (and one who will be recognized as such by a math dept. hiring committee) should be able to explain the relative ranking of the fora in which the candidate's research has appeared. Information of this nature is not only useful for the candidate; it will be welcomed by the committee.
