Jan 2, 2011 at 22:22 comment added Joseph O'Rourke I hope everyone understands (as Timothy does) that I have not answered his question: rather I have placed it in an historical context dating back to the 1935 Erdős–Szekeres paper, "A combinatorial problem in geometry." I still do not see how to adjudicate between Timothy's $m^2$ and $m^3$ bounds.
