Jun 5, 2017 at 22:12 comment added LSpice It is interesting that the 'right' explanation for open-ness depends on of what you think of finite-dimensional real $\mathrm{GL}(n)$ as a special case. If you think of it as a special case of an algebraic group, then the determinant is the way to see that it is (even Zariski) open. If you think of it as a special case of linear operators on a Banach space, then it is easier to find an explicit formula for the inverse of a small perturbation of an invertible transformation.
