Dec 15, 2010 at 17:41 comment added Kevin O'Bryant I've never seen the hat notation; in which field is it standard? I often encounter the set of sets with one element removed, which can be intelligently denoted by $\binom{A}{|A|-1}$.
Dec 15, 2010 at 10:52 comment added Pietro Majer The notation is a bit annoying when applied twice, if we have to skip the j- term of the sequence where the i-term has been skipped.

Dec 14, 2010 at 2:59 comment added Thierry Zell Too long? Seriously?... $$ $$ I obviously have trouble understanding how you can feel so strongly about this notation. But I guess it depends on what you intend to do with it. But as Mariano points out, unless you can come up with a good alternative, your readers will not thank you.

Dec 13, 2010 at 22:26 comment added Dr Shello I love that notation! Is there a context in which it would be used but is problematic?

Dec 13, 2010 at 18:39 comment added Pietro Majer Yes, actually I would have tried to convince the OP to give up his\her hate. The \hat notation is nice. It recalls me the \phantom command in TeX!

Dec 13, 2010 at 17:57 comment added Mariano Suárez-Álvarez That's a very standard notation... why introduce another? "I hate it" is not a great reason to do that to your readers!
