Aug 21 at 12:50 comment added Will Sawin Certainly the invention of set theory is more important than the (incremental?) progress Cantor made in Fourier analysis, even if the relative importance of set theory overall vs. Fourier analysis overall can be disputed. But I think this may not be a relevant answer to the question, since set theory would be part of the proof and not the insight that led to the proof.
