Aug 3 at 8:28 comment added Paul Taylor The title of Hartogs' paper said that it was another proof of the well-ordering principle, following the two by Zermelo. Instead of Choice, Hartogs assumed that, for any two sets, one could be embedded as a subset of the other. However, the lasting value of Hartogs' paper and Zermelo's second one is not their Theorem but their Lemmas (constructions). Zermelo proved in 1908 what became known as the Bourbaki--Witt Theorem (c1950).
