Dec 5, 2018 at 21:18 comment added LSpice One had better be careful to show that $(\det(I + t A) - 1)/t$ is a polynomial, and then take its limit only formally, if one wishes to compute determinants of, say, matrices over finite fields.

In reply, I'd say that context is everything. There are occasions where I've wished the author had left in the messy details and times when I wish they'd left them out.
Jul 10, 2013 at 8:34 comment added Mariano Suárez-Álvarez I will mildly object to your scond second point: it would do wonders if people placed more emphasis in actually convincing others that results are true, and it is not always the case that «elegant proof» you want put to the fore —in opposition to the one that convinced the author— plays that role with much greatness.
