Of course it won't help you with certain types of problems which aren't code-able, but I think if you have programming abilities then you can get a great feel for a problem by coding it. It's not just the conjectural output of the program. It's having to spend hours thinking about how to explain the problem to your computer; it gives you another outlet to think about the problem.
