When you have q\sim in math mode and Poisson in text mode with no space between the foregoing MathJax code and the word Poisson , the result is different from what it is when you have q\sim{} in math mode and Poisson in text mode, again with no space between them, and the latter can be considered correct where the former is not for reasons that should be obvious if you try it and see.
