Jun 8, 2023 at 13:45 comment added Ryan Budney Generally you can't make $k$ any smaller, at least not without some compromises. The example when $n+k=2n$, i.e. $k=n$ is the "Whitney cusp". It is a regular double-point that can't be removed via a small perturbation.
