But there are often solutions for generic surfaces in families, using monodromy of the family. The point is that if one can consistently define an automorphism over a family of surfaces, the eigenspaces of this automorphism define flat subbundles. Often knowledge of monodromy can be used to rule this out. This can often by applied to, ex, certain GL(2,R) orbit closures of translation surfaces. | |
