Re: Question 1, afaict you're saying that the stable module category is interesting as an object in its own right: on the one hand, its existence allows the formulation of new questions, which can be easier to answer than their derived analogs, and on the other hand the structure of the category is just interesting as it is. That's great, and I think adds motivation to my question which is really looking for some a posteriori "story" we might tell "explaining" why this interesting category lurks here.
