Otherwise, maps from $\Pi_1 X$ to $\mathbf C$ only depend on the maximal subgroupoid of $\mathbf C$, while maps from $X$ to $B\mathbf C$ only depend on the ($\infty$-)groupoid completion of $\mathbf C$.
