I don't know why AMS operators behave this way, but I find the space between a quotient and an operator, as $R/\gcd(a, b)$ R/\gcd(a, b) , distracting. I didn't edit out in case you wanted it, but, if it bothers you too, then you can suppress it with braces: $R/{\gcd(a, b)}$ R/{\gcd(a, b)} .
