Oct 27, 2010 at 8:45 comment added quim The second question is true by Bertini (at least in characteristic zero): you have a linear series whose general member is not irreducible; by Bertini's theorem this implies that the series is "composed with a pencil" ie, P(x,y)-c=R(T(x,y),S(x,y),c) with T,S of smaller degree than P. Since one of the members of your series is a multiple of the line at infinity, the same is true for the smaller pencil, so you can take S=1.
