Dec 29, 2022 at 8:00 comment added amd1234 It may be a good idea to use this as you say (instead of using the complement of a line take the complement of a series of disks each do no pierce the knot until the end point of the isotopy) . However in the general case it seems like something else will be needed. Gillman's construction pierces no disc yet is isotopic to the unknot.
