Oct 11, 2022 at 19:24 | comment | added | Somatic Custard | @user76284 I'm not saying math classes should devote a class period to climate-related topics. I am pushing back on the exaggerated claims of time costs. When teaching I take every opportunity for side remarks about relevance to other fields, as building mental networks of knowledge is my favorite method of learning and teaching. This takes very little time. If, further, one wanted to devote a whole class period to the relevant math of one's favorite topic, then in the grand scheme of things this is also not much time. Note: the relevant math...not classes on hunger, history, etc...duh!
Oct 11, 2022 at 14:50 | comment | added | Vladimir Dotsenko | @username "What we are encouraged to do is to include in our curriculum elements concerning adaptation to climate change" IS political activism, as far as I am concerned.
Oct 11, 2022 at 10:34 | comment | added | username | @VladimirDotsenko The teaching tag exists on MathOverflow, I did not invent it. The question I ask has nothing to do with political activism. For example problem 4 in this problem sheet asks students to find the relation between the energy of an atomic bomb and the radius of the fireball. It is not advocating for use of nuclear bombs, and isn't political activism. It is real world examples, making abstraction palatable, tastfefully or not depending on one's views . I am asking for similar examples related to climate change.
Oct 11, 2022 at 7:55 | comment | added | Vladimir Dotsenko | @username - the main problem is that this is about political activism not about mathematics (the "encouragement" to turn a mathematics class to a political forum referred to in the original post should be resisted, not indulged). As a cherry on top of the cake, this is about teaching not about research.

Oct 11, 2022 at 7:19 | comment | added | Vladimir Dotsenko | There are way too many reasons for why this is not appropriate for mathoverflow.

Oct 10, 2022 at 21:01 | comment | added | efs | @user76284 The climate catastrophe is not a political perspective. I'm not debating anything else.
Oct 10, 2022 at 20:47 | comment | added | user76284 | @efs Yes, the idea that math classes should be used to teach activism is a political perspective.
Oct 10, 2022 at 20:33 | comment | added | user76284 | @SomaticCustard Should math classes also devote one whole class period to each of world hunger, poverty, economics, authoritarian regimes, history, psychology, personal finance, health and medicine, the law, the justice system, and countless other topics instead of teaching math?

Guessing that "U/G" means "undergraduate". Please don't use unexplained acronyms!

Oct 7, 2022 at 21:13 | comment | added | Somatic Custard | @MonroeEskew "devote all our time"? You are catastrophizing. It is not time consuming to make occasional mention of various applications, or even to devote one whole class period. Other more relevant applied science courses should certainly discuss the connections, but from an educational standpoint is is very helpful to encounter the same information in multiple contexts and perspectives. Also, from my experience with students, math education really benefits from highlighting relevance to "the real world".

Oct 7, 2022 at 16:41 | comment | added | Enforce | @Monroe Eskew I also don't see how emphasising one area of application across all disciplines is helpful to mathematics, and why mathematics of all things has to be 'green washed'. Still, the question presented to MathOverflow is interesting, in spite of the university's questionable policy decision.
Oct 7, 2022 at 15:34 | comment | added | Monroe Eskew | @username Well I'm not debating the structure of mathoverflow, so it doesn't seem "meta".
Oct 7, 2022 at 15:29 | comment | added | Monroe Eskew | @efs I guess you mean, "It's proven science, not politics!" Sure ok. But the idea that we have to devote all our time to being climate activists is politics, not science.
Oct 7, 2022 at 15:20 | comment | added | username | @MonroeEskew that is certainly an interesting debate, albeit more suitable for meta mathoverflow than for mathoverflow itself, perhaps?
Oct 7, 2022 at 15:19 | comment | added | efs | @MonroeEskew "political perspective"?!
Oct 7, 2022 at 15:06 | comment | added | Monroe Eskew | What is the purpose? Can't relevant courses in the applied sciences cover this topic, while drawing on whatever mathematics is needed? Does every subject need to justify its existence according to some political perspective?
Oct 7, 2022 at 14:53 | comment | added | Caleb Eckhardt | Mathematics for sustainability by Roe et. al. sounds like it is relevant. I haven't read the book so this is just a comment (but I'm familiar with and a fan of John Roe's research writing)
