Sep 25, 2022 at 23:59 | comment | added | François G. Dorais | After reading this, I realized that "relaxation" is not a reliable method to simplify Collatz-like problems. For example, if Collatz is restated using $x \mapsto (3x + 1)/2$ and $x \mapsto x/2$ then the "relaxed" version is exactly the same as the original. This is because neither map can send a non-integer dyadic rational to an integer. Using $x \mapsto 3x + 1$ and $x \mapsto x/2$ gives some more wiggle room so "relaxation" might actually help but there can't be a general reason why "relaxation" would help, it has to be specific to this combination of affine maps. | |
