May 6, 2022 at 18:52 comment added Andromeda Lovely argument! We can also invoke the more elementary fact that any element in a unital $C^*$-algebra is a finite linear combination of unitaries. Eventually, we get $\|\pi\|\le 1$ for free by general properties of $C^*$-morphisms.
