May 7, 2022 at 11:43 | comment | added | Jukka Kohonen | I was taking the mower's perspective, not the mathematician's. Surely it is difficult to find exactly the minimum sufficient speed, but as soon as the mower has cleared the intersections (having turned around an infinite number of times), and has only a few linear weed segments left, he will sigh from relief.

May 7, 2022 at 11:23 | comment | added | Jukka Kohonen | Eric, I agree! But I thought it is useful to point out that the intersections are the ... ahem, Achilles' heel of the grass. If you clear them, the remaining parts should be relatively easy!

May 7, 2022 at 11:06 | comment | added | Jukka Kohonen | A small observation: Whatever the mower's speed, he must make an infinite number of visits to each threeway intersection to completely clear it. Consider the intersection on the left, which initially has grass on all three branches. If the mower enters along branch 1 and exits along branch 2, grass regrows from the third branch back to both 1 and 2. By the time he gets back along some branch, the other two branches have some length of grass, and going to one of them leaves again one branch to seed the regrowth. It's like Achilles and the tortoise (but dividing tortoises in this case).
