Concretely, $\lvert G\rvert^{-1}\sum_\chi \chi(g)^{-1}\sum_{x \in X} \chi(x)$ is $1$ if $g$ belongs to $X$ and $0$ otherwise (and, in general, if $X$ is a multiset, then the sum counts the multiplicity of $g$ in $X$, as @GeraldEdgar mentioned). | |
