If I remember correctly, the approach in Silverman derives it from Riemann-Roch (which I think is what the top answer in the linked question is referring to, though I don't have my copy of Silverman at hand at the moment). Definitely more motivated than just presenting a formula as a fait accompli, and I think elliptic curves are often encountered well before general algebraic geometry. | |
